San Francisco 49ers 33

Miami Dophins 17

December 4, 2022

Mr. VERY Relevant

Brock Purdy

First, all our best wishes to Jimmy Garoppolo for a complete and speedy recovery. We empathize with you as you work through the unfortunate injury you sustained in yesterday's game and thank you for your Herculean 49er efforts throughout all the years. We know it hurts, but you will not be stopped.

Yesterday the 49ers faced a team, the Miami Dolphins, who may lead the league in ex-49ers; a dangerous recipe, as the Dolphins proved on the first play of the game when ex-Niner Trent Sherfield bolted for a 75-yard touchdown on a pass from Miami QB Tua Tagovailoa.

However, Brock Purdy, the winner of the 2022 Mr. Irrelevant award as Draft Selection #262, the last pick of the draft, transformed that award into the height of irony as he helped the Niners soundly defeat Miami after JimmyG left the game.

On passes to Brandon Aiyuk and Christian McCafferty (CMC), Purdy drove the team smoothly and set up a Robbie Gould 47-yard field goal. (For a clip of the 2022 Mr. Irrelevant Award, click below. If you're not a Niner fan, watch it and weep.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XL8lD6cGy3U

On the next drive, with tough runs from Jordan Mason, Purdy tossed a TD to Juszczyk to make it 10-7, Niners. When a Dolphin tripped OG Banks, that penalty helped, as did a Power Tackle by Greenlaw on Tyreek Hill. After a punt, a Mostert first-down run kept alive the "ex-49er" mystique, but a Bosa sack helped contain the Dolphins drive and the score was 10-10 after a 43-yard FG. Another Bosa sack forced a punt, which is when Mr. Real Relevant started to click: (Note for posterity: "Purdy to McCaffery" ©️, the Official First Usage of this phrase.) Then it was Purdy to CMC for a touchdown; 17-10 at the half.

The Niners started the second half with a pass to J. Jeffries, "Mr. Clutch." The 49ers punted, and were successful in challenges. Lip readers should have been warned to avoid video of Miami coach

Mike McDaniel -- not a happy fellow.

After Miami took possession at 10:01 of the third quarter, an interception by Ward set up Purdy, and with rapid-fire Samuel and Aiyuk passes and a Mason run, helped by a big Rugby push by big Aaron Banks and some wild plays, it was time for another Gould FG: 20-10.

After a Deommodore Lenoir interception and a Mason run, it was time for a 36-yard FG: 23-10. But the Dolphins are dangerous, as a 45-yard TD strike to Tyreek Hill proved. 23-17. Still plenty of time.

After a Purdy sack, the 49ers punted. After challenges, the Niners regained possession, and with a Purdy-to-Kittle pass and a 30-yard CMC run, the Niners booted another FG: 26-17. Soon, Tua fumbled as Bosa hit him and Greenlaw scooped and scored: 33-17. Fred Warner would also chalk up an interception with 1:42 left.

Letters to the Editor

How Much Does a Judge Cost?

People have asked that question for years, albeit for different reasons. The Yankees recently answered it, and reportedly offered one Judge a contract in the neighborhood of eight years, $300 million. Nevertheless, BetOnline.ag has made the Giants a -130 favorite to land Judge, a change, as the Yankees had been the favorites. It's a "too-close-to-call" primary, Baseball style.

One Sports Today Letter-writer, Andy from Safeway, Pacific Grove, may have had it right when he stated that Judge would stay with the Yankees (and the G-Men need the next Barry Bonds). My guess is the high bidder will be the Dodgers, as in "LeJudge."

Jeopardy: Soccer Acronyms and Abbreviations

Answer: NIL N.I.L.

Question: What does a defeated soccer player receive?

(As in No Name Image Likeness benefits)

Seriously though, the American team was a Dream for United States soccer. Our Team: Dignified, tough, dedicated and patriotic throughout, and an inspiration to millions of people.

A Nil (0-0) game vs. England, (which was the courteous way to go vs. our friends -- they've had a tough go of it lately), and then, (wait for it), they beat Iran! That alone is worth the price of admission. Our greatest foreign policy success in decades -- while the athletes themselves helped add some humanity to their respective opponents and their countries. For a few days they could be athletes and competitors, not pawns in a geopolitical chess game.

So, the Netherlands won on Sunday. Hey, if you have to lose, why not the Netherlands? They're friendly, plus, let's face it, soccer is their WORLD. Maybe they'll win it all, now that they've beaten the BEST team.

A fascinating tour of Oakland sports history and a look toward the future of professional sports in the East Bay.

Oakland is a sports city like no other. It is the only city in America to be abandoned by the same team twice, with the Raiders most recently leaving for Las Vegas. The Golden State Warriors, who crossed the bay in 1971 in search of better digs, have now returned to San Francisco with trophies in tow. The long-fought battle to keep the Oakland Athletics in the East Bay may narrowly save the city from a hat trick of departures.

Winter Quarter 2023 -- BUS 119

Title: Make Sense of the Madness:

The Evolving Business of College Athletics

Instructor -- Andy Dolich

The business of college athletics is booming. Close to 2,000 athletic departments throughout the U.S. generate $25.5 billion in media rights while attracting over 190 million enthusiastic, ticket-buying fans. This industry is evolving real-time in increasingly complex ways. The recent news that USC and UCLA are leaving the Pac-12 for the Big Ten Conference has created waves of uncertainty and speculation about the future. Just a year ago, college athletes were first permitted to profit from the rights for their Name, Image, or Likeness (NIL) while on the playing fields of their schools. What do these seismic changes mean for college athletes, administrators, and fans now and

in the future?

This course examines the business of college sports past,

present and future.

Session One -- Introduction on the Business of College Sports

Session Two -- Overview of the changes in the Pac-12 and beyond -- Ted Robinson

Session Three -- Economics -- Dr. Dan Rascher

Session Four -- The Media -- Jon Wilner

Session Five -- Athletes and coaches - Ben Braun

Session Six -- Final Round -- Table with representatives of involved

constituencies.

Sessions will include interactive discussions from industry experts.

Students will leave this course with insights into the revolutionary changes affecting the business of college sports.

A's aim to make most of Winter Meetings return

Following event's two-year absence, club has several areas in need of upgrades

By Martín Gallegos  @MartinJGallegos

The absence of the Winter Meetings over the past two off seasons certainly had an effect on the A’s.

In previous years, the A’s have utilized the event as an opportunity to lay the foundation for future moves. Now working with more of a normal offseason again, A’s general manager David Forst has indicated discussions both on the trade and free-agent fronts are already underway as they seek to make improvements upon what was only the second 100-loss season in Oakland history.

With the Winter Meetings getting underway on Sunday in San Diego, here is everything you need to know.

Oakland A's

In his MLB debut, Murphy hit his first career home run for his first hit. Murphy was awarded his first Gold Glove Award on

November 7, 2021. Photo by Darren Yamashita.

Sean Murphy, Last of The Mohicans

by Amaury Pi-Gonzalez

Since they began play in Oakland in 1968, the A’s have had some terrific catchers. One of them was Gene Tenace who hit four home runs in the 1972 World Series and won the MVP. He was part of the A’s dynasty (1972-73-74). During the glory years of the 1980s, Terry Steinbach, a three-time All-Star and the MVP of the 1988 All-Star Game, was a clutch hitter who drove in seven runs during the A’s 1989 World Series sweep against the San Francisco Giants. He was very productive and in my opinion, underrated.

Ramón Hernández, who was one of six All-Star catchers in Oakland A’s history, also played the backstop for the A’s. Most recently, and although he only played in Oakland for a brief time, one of the most popular receivers was Stephen Vogt, who started his career with a home run and ended it with a home run in his final at bat this past season. Vogt became the third player in MLB history to have that type of home-run-bookend of a career. Of course, we cannot forget Ray Fosse for the A’s behind the plate, and who was a very popular radio and television commentator for the team.

Currently still an Oakland A’s is Sean Murphy, named one of the Top-10 best catchers in MLB. He is the last one of the most recent star players who haven't left the A’s during the last couple of seasons. These have included, mostly notably; Chris Bassitt, Frankie Montás, Matt Olson, Matt Chapman, to mention a few.

While the A’s traded their first baseman (Olson) and third baseman (Chapman), their shortstop, Elvis Andrus, was signed by the White Sox right after he was released by the A’s. Murphy is the only regular A’s on the infield who remains. At least a half-dozen teams are interested in Murphy’s services.

One of the best candidates involving a trade for Murphy is the San Diego Padres, under the direction of ex-A’s manager Bob Melvin (who was also a catcher) and is probably the #1 contender. Also in the mix are the Chicago White Sox, St Louis Cardinals, and Boston Red Sox.

Murphy was a nominee for the AL 2022 Gold Glove Award, won by Yankee’s José Trevino. He will be missed if he changes jerseys this off-season, but we can say that of most of the players that have left Oakland recently.

Because the A’s are strong and young in the catching position, now with 25-year-old Shea Langeliers, who became a strong #2 catcher behind Murphy this past season and will probably be their #1 catcher next season, plus 21-year-olds in the minors like Daniel Susac and Tyler Soderstrom, it is likely they will part with Murphy this winter and acquire more prospects and maybe one established veteran.

Why do I say this? Because there is a precedent. This is what the A’s have been famous for, especially when rebuilding. So why are we going to expect anything but… plus like Casey said:

“You have to have a catcher because if you don’t, you’re likely to have a lot of passed balls”. – Casey Stengel.

 Halftime

by Howard Pearlstein

I said it before, preseason, that Brock Purdy has a sense of stillness in the pocket and out of it, surrounded by crashing and splashing like the middle of the Hokusai wave.

And that anyone who loved to watch Joe Montana feels a positive rush of nostalgia watching Purdy. Whether or not he gets to put the rest of it together, we’ll see. But the best-ever passing QB in Iowa State’s history, has some credentials. Iowa State, like Joe’s Notre Dame, plays some serious open plains teams -- Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, etc.

So hoping Jimmy G gets to show his stuff again soon, but still…

This is an autographed photo of Ted Williams, Dom DiMaggio and Joe DiMaggio I purchased back in late 1970s from Heritage Auctions for about $75, which was a lot of money back then. Gayles Big Day Leads USF Past SDSU

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Returning back to the City by the Bay on a Sunday afternoon, the USF Dons women's basketball team (7-2) earned a hard fought neutral site victory over a good San Diego State Aztecs (7-2) team by a 65-56 final at the Chase Center. Playing at the home of the Golden State Warriors, the Dons brought championship level defense to the floor as they forced the Aztecs into 25 turnovers and only four second chance points to pick up their fifth straight win on the season.

The Dons utilized their depth and deep bench as USF's reserves totaled 42 of the team's bench with Jasmine Gayles' game-high 19 points and six rebounds pacing the way in the team's fifth straight win. Debora dos Santos was able to put together a solid performance for the Dons as she contributed 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting while also securing five rebounds to go along with a pair of assists and steals.

More than a cookbook, this culinary delight was written to preserve a great chef's traditional family recipes and stories of her childhood for her far-flung grandchildren. Author Leonie Samuel-Hool recounts stories of a vanished society and legends of the gods and goddesses that protect and sometimes make mischief in Indonesian homes, fields and foods. The recipes are explicitly presented.

The absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1853 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. "The Yankee Way," Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's foreword, is "full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competition, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods." By Charlie Silvera with Dave Newhouse (Author).

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and 4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
